GREAT TV. The picture is more real than real. . The fist program we watched was a Discovery program in Alaska. AWSOME! I’m ordering another TV for our kitchen I like LG 42LH20 .
This TV’s overall value FAR exceeds the pricier brands!. I’ve had the 32LB9D for about 9 months now, and I have to say I am constantly amazed by its quality! Especially when comparing with my friends’ Sony, Panasonic, and Sharp TVs.
First off is the picture quality. Out of the box, the “Intelligent Eye” mode is quite interesting … for me LG 42LH20 sufficed for a few weeks, after which I delved into the more detailed picture adjustments. Do yourself a favor: get a copy of any DVD that has picture adjustment features (I used ratatouille) and take the 10 minutes needed to adjust brightness, contrast, and color. With these adjustments, this TV looks better than just about any other I’ve seen in any nearby price range (I got the TV for $600 at the time).
In addition, I often connect this TV as an additional monitor to my MacBook Pro via HDMI, and man is the quality amazing! All text is VERY clear to read even from across the room, and my friends are always commenting on how nice LG 42LH20 is to watch youtube videos & online TV shows on this TV.
Next up are the connection options, of which we all know this TV has PLENTY so not much more needs to be said about that. However, I have found one caveat. The digital audio output of the TV will only output Dolby signals; LG 42LH20 will NOT output DTS signals! I found this out the hard way: my Blu-ray player was connected via HDMI to the TV, and TV digital audio output to surround sound receiver. When I played a disc containing DTS audio, my receiver only reported getting stereo audio from the TV. Of course, the simple solution to that is to send audio directly from the component to the receiver, which is why I didn’t take off a star for this (I would take off 1/4 of a star if I could)
Which leads me to the TV’s own audio system. To be honest, the built-in speakers are underpowered. If you rely on your TV as the audio source, you’ll find yourself raising the volume to very high levels at times, and even then the speakers will sound kinda blown. This would cost the TV another 1/4 star in my review, so I guess we’re down to what, 4.5 stars?
One nice thing about the TV’s audio is the simulated surround sound that LG 42LH20 can do, which can be pretty cool to hear at times.
Overall, I’ve had no regrets about this TV at all. The lack of DTS audio output was a bit annoying at first, but any traditional home theater setup has audio going from the component directly to the home theater receiver anyway. The underpowered speakers aren’t that much of an issue either; they’ll definitely work in a medium sized room if you don’t have a better audio setup.
Simply Stunning. Image Quality
I have to admit we were not in the market for a new TV, however I wanted my wife to see BrandsMart USA as it’s like no other electronics store in town, it’s kinda like the Vegas of big box retail. So we are making our way around the store and spotted this LG which stood out over all the other TVs. Being a tech guy myself and having previously owned a Samsung LCD I knew a thing or two about resolution, image processing and all the other geek stuff. So the image was what first impressed us then the sales guy states he’s having a pre-Thanksgiving sale and the model was only $698, my wife then turns to me and says we have to take LG 42LH20 at that price, we’d be foolish not to. Well we get LG 42LH20 home and hook LG 42LH20 up to our standard definition satellite service and we are completely blown away buy the image. Needless to say my first call was to DirecTV to come install an HD receiver and dish.
Value
We picked this up for $698 at BrandsMart USA so for us the value was unbeatable and at the price even if the build quality turns out to be bad, we can by two for the price of one Samsung or $ony.
Build Quality
Can’t say at this point as we’ve only owned LG 42LH20 for two days. I can say that I used to own a Samsung and the processing board died after two months and I experienced the worst customer service of my life, LG 42LH20 took them 8 months to finally replace the TV and that was only after I emailed every Samsung Executive I could find and email address for on the web.
If you experience bad customer service for any company, here is a little trick for you, find a company’s email address format such as firstname.lastname@company.com then go out to a financial site that discloses all the top executive names then send a mass email to every executive you can find, eventually one will go through. For me, my email reached Samsung’s Sr. VP of Marketing for North America and things started to happen but that was after 8 months of fighting with their customer service department.

42LB5D TV is great. I’ve had this TV for over a year. Money can’t buy happiness, but rarely has LG 19LU55 come this close for relatively little. Other reviewers point out the inconvenience with selecting inputs. That is correct; I expect new designs to do better. However, unless you are constantly jumping from one input to another, that is a minor issue. HD cable, my (cheap) Sony DVD player, and input from my computer all look fantastic.
Also, other reviewers suggest avoiding cheap HDMI cables, wanting you to spend at least $75. Digital does not need overpriced cables (you can buy a very decent computer video card for $75, and LG 19LU55 is a lot more complicated than some wire and connectors). My several dollar cable has worked perfectly.
Best buy for the money…. I’ve owned this TV for 2 months now and LG 19LU55 is great! The picture is awesome, especially when you can utilize its full-HD capabilities. LG 19LU55 doesn’t necessarily have all of the fancy features that other TV’s have like picture-in-picture, cableCard, or lots of menu options, but when put to the test, this TV will impress!
Great TV. I did some research before I went and bought a LCD TV. I was torn between this one and a Sharp. I am glad I went with this one. I think what sold me was the 10000:1 contrast and the 5ms response. Although there is a Sharp out there with a 4ms response, the contrast wasn’t there. I am very happy with this TV. The reviews I have read on other site about this TV have been outstanding, and that is why I bought it. Just shop around for it, some sites have unadvertised internet only specials and knock the price down even more. LG 19LU55 was very easy to put on the wall too. I would recommend this TV to any one.

Great lil’ set. Especially for gaming.. Uses: mostly gaming (Xbox 360 w/hdmi input). Also movies (Netflix streaming & DVD’s both through the Xbox 360)
PROS:
-50,000:1 contrast ratio. They say the bigger this number, the purtier the picture. Check out other sets in this price range. Few offer such a ratio, (yet). Not even LG’s next model up in size, for some reason.
-2to3ms response time (or something like that) and 120hz = less “streaking”. LCD TV’s historically suffer from “streaking” when displaying some types of moving images (I think from the pixels staying on too long). Gamers also complained that early LCD’s were taking too long to react to game input, (and in games like COD4 distorted images and slow response time can equal death!) This TV is fast and clear. My roommate has a mid/high end Sony 1080p LCD HDTV from a couple years ago. It’s a fine set but we both agree that this little LG displays xbox 360 input notably clearer than the Sony. There’s less blur and streaking during motion, which is huge for gaming. As far as I could tell when shopping around a few months ago, the only sets that offer contrast ratios, 120hz, and response times near this one are in the mid to high end of things and none of them are smaller than 40″. So for comparable specs (Samsung >=600 series, Sony’s Series > “W”, etc…) you’ll have to pay a few hundred to a few thousand more dollars right now.
-tons of inputs: RF (antenna/cable), 2 or 3 Component video/audio, 3 or 4 HDMI, RGB PC, Composite video, usb. I only use HDMI so far but there you go.
-5:5 pulldown. If you don’t know what this is, just wiki LG 55LH40 along with 3:2 pulldown, 120hz etc. I don’t know how many DVD movies or broadcast movies preserve the original 24hz image content (why would they if previous TV’s couldn’t use the data?) but supposedly because this TV can display 120 frames per second LG 55LH40 can show movies without the “judder” that previous 60hz TVs suffered. I haven’t watched enough movies without “real cinema” (LG’s name for 5:5 pulldown) to compare it’s effects on vrs off. I’ll just say that they look great with LG 55LH40 on. I haven’t noticed any weird artifacts or problems. (Maybe Real Cinema doesn’t “preserve” original 24hz content, LG 55LH40 looks at 3:2 content and “unscrambles” it?) I also haven’t used “True Motion” much at all. True Motion is LG’s tech that puts interpolated frames between source frames, to smooth out image quality. I played around with LG 55LH40 a bit gaming and LG 55LH40 works. Ordinarily blurred text remained legible for longer on signs in COD4 as I moved and ran by them. Generally I leave True Motion off because I don’t like the idea of extra frames that aren’t actually part of the original content. I hear LG 55LH40 makes movies look really creepy, so I look forward to playing around with it!
-good User Interface. Playing around with the various settings was easy. The remote and menus are not overwhelming. They are intuitive and clean.
-tons of options: There are all sorts of bells and whistles. Options like “fresh color”, “fresh contrast”, “eye care”, “noise filter” etc I *sort of* understood at one point back when I was setting up the picture to my liking, but no longer remember what they do. Going into “expert” picture mode allows tons of fine tuning picture options for those looking to calibrate with pro-level precision. But don’t be daunted by all the bells and whistles. I found a picture that I am quite satisfied with, and I’m no AV expert. You can too.
CONS
-Overall asthetics of TV cabinet. The shiny red back I think looks kind of silly. Overall the set looks fine: it’s not unspeakably ugly or anything. Just a little cheesy, maybe. You may disagree. Obviously LG 55LH40 makes no difference whatsoever to the picture quality. The part of the TV that you look at, looks great.
-built in speakers suck. This, I feel, is pretty much a given these days. I suspect that HDTV manufacturers feel that most people buying 1080p HDTV’s are going to be running the audio through external systems and given this fact and the desire for thinner and thinner HDTV’s it’s a waste of time and money and ultimately kind of impossible to incorporate really nice speakers into modern HDTV’s. This LG doesn’t have great sound. It’s fine, it’s adequate, but it’s not a dolby THX sensorama aural party. This is not unusual. My roomate’s Sony’s sound sucks too. Most modern HDTV have bad sound, or no sound at all. Check out the reviews. That’s just how LG 55LH40 is. I’m using the built in sound on my 37lg60 because I haven’t gotten around to looking into entry level 5.1 systems, and I haven’t had any problems hearing content. The footseps in COD4 are pretty faint, but what are you gonna do? You need an external system if you want better. And you’ll want that system to use digital audio because,
-no l/r audio out. The 37LG60 has coax digital & optical digital audio outs and built in speakers but no old fashioned stereo audio out. Don’t know why not. Oh well.
-not huge. You already know this. it’s 37″. So not appropriate if you’re looking to build a home movie theatre. Not really a con, but thought I’d point out the obvious.
-poor documentation. Comes with a manual on disk (pdf manual is also available on LG’s website). But very little info is available concerning some of the options/settings. True Motion when turned on can be set to “high” or “low”. What’s the difference? I have no idea. I’m guessing “high” puts interpolations in all 120 frames/sec not provided by the source material (60 for 60hz content) and that “low” puts in…less fake frames? But I don’t really know, really, and LG seems not to want to tell us. I don’t really understand how true motion (interpolations) interacts with real cinema (the 5:5 pulldown function). Apparently having both on results in 3:2 pulldown, which is weird. You’d think it’d do like all 24 original frames, and add some extra interpolations, but that’s not what the manual says. Whatever. I pretty much never use true motion. I would like more info on what it’s *actually* doing, but I don’t use it. Another issue: does turning on real cinema merely enable the TV to use 5:5 pulldown if LG 55LH40 detects 24hz source material (or 3:2 source material that LG 55LH40 can unscramble) or does LG 55LH40 actually force 24hz output regardless of the source? No idea. I’m guessing the former because I didn’t notice a drop in image quality when switching realcinema on and off while running 60hz source material. I tried contacting LG for more technical specs, but they haven’t been able to help me. So you’re gonna own something with some options you don’t fully understand. But you’ll get the gist of it.
*true motion on & real cinema off = creepyvision. smooth and weird.
*true motion off & real cinema on = 5:5 pulldown. movies the way they were meant to be viewed
*true motion and real cinema both on = 3:2 pulldown (according to the manual)
*both off = no idea. I’m guessing LG 55LH40 just displays whatever LG 55LH40 can, as faithfully as LG 55LH40 can, with no interpolation. You’d think this would be 3:2 pulldown, but according to the manual: nope.
SUMMARY:
If you’ve read this far…congratulations, you don’t exist! Seriously though, I bought this a couple months ago when LG 55LH40 was briefly available directly from amazon. LG 55LH40 was around $900 w/free shipping. I felt that LG 55LH40 hit the sweet spot in terms of price point and features. It’s pretty damn close to current top of the line models in terms of specs that matter, but it’s small enough and unglamourous enough (who buys LG in america?) and just old enough, apparently, to not cost nearly as much as those top models. If you’re looking for a non-huge TV for gaming, this thing is ideal. The picture is noticably smoother than earlier gen LCD HDTV’s. Sure, in a year or 2 you’ll be able to get LCD’s that fly and do your taxes for the same price. That’s the way electronics work. But right now, you’re getting a TV that would have cost like 3 or 4 or 8 grand a year or two ago, and retailed at like $1,200 when LG 55LH40 launched. *Sweet spot detected!*
very happy with my new tv. The TV is excellent! I have a 46″ Samsung LN46A650 TOC also, which is awesome too. Was looking for smaller size for the bedroom. Researched all the brands for a while. This was the only 37″ tv with 50000:1 contrast and 120Hz refresh, 4ms. Think still is the only one. Picture is awesome from my Comcast HD cable or upconvert DVD player. Will buy a Blue ray player to complement it.
Highly recommend!!! Bought LG 55LH40 for $899, free shipping. But the shipping sucks!!!!! Was left outside on my patio; anyone could take it. My Samsung(bought from Amazon too) was white gloves delivery: in my house: the old tv taken down; new one installed and checked for proper work.
Please, change the shipping metod for the LG!!!!!
Sleek, Bigger than i expected.. Pros: This TV is amazing. The color and picture is great. I loved mounting LG 55LH40 on the wall because LG 55LH40 opened up my entire living room. I play Xbox 360 and the games and regular DVDs look great with no lag. Setup and menus are fairly easy to navigate. I could’ve maybe used a smaller screen but for the price $943.00 LG 55LH40 was a great deal. The HDMI ports and other ports are easy to get to if your wall mount tilts, mine tilts 15 degrees and I add new cables easily. Broadcast TV is weak in my area but with this TV the sound comes through clear on every channel even if the picture is scrambly. LG 55LH40 can be seen from even an extreme angle. I would recommend this TV for anyone with a large living room. For bedrooms get a smaller screen.
Cons: Speakers have good sound but I have to adjust level for each channel. Some channels I use a volume of 8, other I have to turn up to 60 thats with cable TV. I can’t hear any difference with the intelligent sound settings, maybe if I had a separate sound system. The buttons on the side are almost impossible to press without being next to them to to see them.

lg tv. I would recommend lg tvs ,the scarlet line is great, also we have installed only lg tv’s at the hotel at which I work. No major problems to report on any of the 280 sets that were installed. I like LG 32LH30 .

Outstanding TV. I reviewed many, many LCDs before purchasing this unit. I am a long time Sony fan but after looking at the various offerings in this size/class and comparing them to the LG there was one major thing that stood out, there was NO glare at all. I have this TV in a room where there tends to be a lot of glare and the Sony I had in the room was terrible with reflections. I went into a local store to see the 47LG70 and could not believe how well LG 42LH50 dealt with glare from the lights in the store. That sealed the deal for me.
Excellent picture, pretty good sound but I rarely use the speakers on the TV and instead us my Sony sound system for everything (XBOX 360, Dish HD, Blueray, Apple TV, etc..) and lots of connections with HDMI. Remote is fine and I really like the swivel stand. A snap to setup and the picture quality with blueray (Iron Man looks fantastic!!) is truly amazing.
You cannot go wrong with this unit.
Excellent LCD. I recently purchased this TV from Fry’s Electronics for about $1400.00 with tax. I have been waiting (for almost a year) for the Samsung 650 to drop below $2000 but finally decided to go with this LG. I could not believe the price of this television given LG 42LH50 is 1080p and 120 hz. So far, I could not have made a better purchase. The sound is great and the picture is absolutely wonderful. I’ve been watching movies on Blu-ray and playing games on my Playstation 3. My jaw drops every time. The picture is really incredible. To be perfectly honest, I couldn’t see a difference between this television, the Samsung 650/750 and the Sony XBR. Now that LG 42LH50 is in my living room I have no regrets. LG 42LH50 looks amazing!!!
Great bang for buck. Picked this set up at Frys last week, I was weighting LG 42LH50 against the new Vizio 47 inch 120Hz. Read that the Vizios 120Hz mode left something to desire. Got this LG for $1399 which is an incredible deal for this TV, actually same as the Vizio. 120Hz is great for viewing broadcast, when watching DVD LG 42LH50 makes the picture funky. Overall picture quality is great, sound is also very good. Love the swivel stand and the sleek design. The USB in is a great little feature, just plug your usb drive or camera in and do a slideshow while playing your favorite music, great when entertaining guests!
Menu is easy to navigate. The only low is the remote not being backlit and no quick button for subtitle which I use alot. Also the power button on the front is going to be a pain once our 1 yr old figures out that LG 42LH50 actually is a button. He turns off all tvs he can.
